Tenerife's capital and main port, Santa Cruz, lies on the northeast coast of the island and is joint capital of the Canary Islands together with Las Palmas. Yachts bound for the Caribbean gather here in the weeks before an Atlantic crossing, and cruising rallies have set off from the port over the years, some sailing directly west and others breaking the passage at Cape Verde.
